TOWN HALL ON SCHOOL FUNDING REFORM

Thank you to all who joined us for a community town hall on school funding reform on December 6 at Jefferson Street Missionary Baptist Church! Our funding formula has become an engine of inequality and we have an opportunity to replace one of the nation’s most underfunded and inequitable education funding formulas in the country.

It’s time we stopped trying to educate our children with the same small pie. Let’s increase the size of the pie, Commissioner Schwinn and Governor Lee!

Send comments to the commissioner at [email protected] to let her know that our children are a sacred trust. We deserve adequate funding in order to:

  1. Pay teachers a high enough salary to attract and keep the very best, recognizing that in different parts of the State there may have to be an adjustment.
  2. Fund professional development for our teachers so that they continue to be the best.
  3. Fund enough teachers to comply with State law mandates for student/teacher ratios.
  4. Provide funding for modern technology, inside and outside the classroom, so our children receive an education tailored to the 21stcentury economy.
  5. Fund all of the nurses, social workers, and counselors that are necessary to care for the physical and emotional health needs of all our children.
  6. Fund programming and additional professionals sufficient to meet the needs of low-income students, English learners, students with disabilities, and students that are performing before grade level.

Please join us Monday, December 13 at 6:30 pm for the next State Action Committee meeting. Register here. We will discuss our next steps, which include: continued conversations with officials leading the education review process, and emails to Commissioner Schwinn, and planning for the 2022 legislative session.

Read the letter that we sent to Governor Lee and Commissioner Schwinn about the need to increase funding for Tennessee schools.
